Heating Tips

Heating Tips

Of course, you need a good heating system to keep your home toasty warm all winter long. But you don’t want to be paying huge heating bills either. Fortunately, you shouldn’t have to. The following are some home heating tips that should help you stay warm this winter while cutting down on your energy costs at the same time.

Sealed Up Tight

The most important thing you can do to make sure you’re not wasting money on heating is to seal up all of the windows and doors that you can. Block any place where cold outside air could come in and where warm air may be escaping.

Heating up the area around your house probably isn’t what you had in mind when you had that state of the art heating system installed anyway. So put some plastic over your windows and even over the doors that you may not use in the winter or at all. You’ll be surprised how dramatic a difference this can make.

Th

ermostat Control

You can also help reduce your heating costs by setting your thermostat a little bit lower on a regular basis. 72°F is the number that most people go for, but would you really be any less comfortable at 69°F or 70°F?

In fact, you probably wouldn’t even notice, but turning your thermostat down just that small amount can have a dramatic impact on your heating bill. You can also cut heating costs dramatically by turning the heat down when no one is home and when you’re sleeping.

A digital programmable thermostat can make this even easier and convenient because it allows you to set a particular temperature for a particular time of day. For instance, you can set your heat to come on about half an hour before you get up in the morning or half an hour before you typically arrive home from work each evening. With that kind of control, you can enjoy the comfort of always walking into a warm house without having to pay to keep the heat running all day.

Although not everyone has this option, installing a heating system that provides you with multiple climate zones in your house can also help you save a great deal on energy. It’s not hard to see how you’d save money if you could turn on the heat only in the part of the house that you’re currently using. That way, you’ll always be comfortable in your own home, but you won’t have to pay to heat a bunch of rooms that aren’t in use.

Shut Off Unused Rooms

And even if you don’t have a heating system that allows you to set different temperatures in different areas of your home, you can do it manually by shutting the vents and sealing off the doors to rooms that you don’t generally use. If you wind up needing to use them, it’s easy enough to open the vents back up again, but until then, your heating system won’t have to work as hard to keep the rest of your home warm.

Heating Maintenance for Efficiency

Keeping up with a regular schedule of heating maintenance visits will also contribute to lower heating bills and fewer necessary repairs over time. Depending on the type of heating system you have, it may need to be serviced once a year or it may be able to go for longer than that.

Regardless, keeping up with the maintenance schedule that’s appropriate for your heating system will help to keep your home warmer in winter and at a lower cost to you. It will also give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have a fully functioning heating system ready to go when you need it.
